About The Chalice Well Red Spring:
It is one of the greatest mysteries of the Isle of Avalon that two different healing springs, one touched red with iron, the other white with calcite, should rise within a few feet of each other from the caverns beneath Glastonbury Tor, both having healing in their flow.

As for the Red Spring, a well covering featuring two overlapping circles was given to the town as a gift in 1919. The overlapping circles form the Vesica Piscis symbol, with a sword or spear bisecting the central mandorla or almond-shaped overlap. The intent is that the circles are the overlapping inner and outer worlds and the sword is Excalibur. Oh, and Vesica Piscis means "Fish Bladder". There are many other theories as to the meaning of the symbol, and some say the well cover marks a door to the fey realm.

According to legend, the Chalice Well is believed to have sprung from the ground at the location where the chalice (the Holy Grail), that Jesus drank from at the Last Supper and in which drops of His blood were caught during the Crucifixion was placed.

The sacred vessel is believed to have been placed into the well by 'Joseph of Arimathea'.

The well itself is thought to have been built by the Druids, and that the water the gushes from it, reddish in colour and tasting of iron, has been claimed to have magical powers.

The colour of the water and the taste according to legend is said to symbolise the iron nails that were used at the Crucifixion. Visitors can still drink the water which is today believed to possess healing properties.

For others with a more mystical, pagan outlook the waters are acknowledged as the essence of life, the gift from Mother Earth to sustain its living forms. There are events that take place through the year at Chalice Wells for followers of this outlook

The Chalice well is a natural spring located in the Chalice Well Gardens between the Tor and town, and it is a popular tourist attraction.

The well is said to have been in constant use for the last 2,000 years. The well’s water, which is so rich in iron that it runs red, does not fail to issue at least 25,000 gallons of water per day, even through droughts. Because of its hue, reliability, and situation within Glastonbury, the well is considered sacred, and its waters healing.

Some believe the Red and White Spring represent the God and Goddess or the male and female aspects of God! The Red Spring representing the menstrual blood of the woman/feminine, and the White Spring representing the seed of the man/masculine.

With the well being a symbol of femininity, for many, it is a destination for paying homage to feminine deities.

For others still, the fairies who reside under the Tor who also spend time in the Well, are believed to give the water its healing properties.

The famous well is located at the back of the ample garden, and there are benches located throughout for relaxing and taking in the beauty, contemplation and meditation. The water flows through the garden and there is a small pool where you can paddle or bathe in the waters.

Chalice Well is located just east of Glastonbury and is on the marked way from the town centre to Glastonbury Tor. The White Spring is in a straight line just yards from Chalice Well at the foot of the climb to Glastonbury Tor.
