UPS means Uninterrupted Power Supply. That means, even if there is an interruption of a fraction of a second in switching over, logically it is not UPS! For most of the domestic purposes, we are actually using INVERTERS and calling it as UPS. Inverters take a fraction of a second for switching over from mains power to battery power, when mains power fails. That is, in an inverter there will be about half a second time delay in switching over, after power failure. But this will not matter at all for any household equipment, such as fans, lights, TV and so on. But a small interruption affects the performance computers and similar gadgets.
Actually, a real UPS which is not going to have a switching delay will be costly compared to Inverter. But since it is almost immaterial for domestic purpose, we can buy inverter. But since it matters for computers, we can have small UPS for computer only, which is running through the main inverter. Thus, even though there is a delay in the main inverter, the small UPS used for the computer will supply continuous power for the computer during that small delay. So, in this book, the term UPS is used but actually, it is the inverter.
Most of the people are guided by the friend or neighbor’s advice about the cost and simply buy UPS, without considering any parameter. Your requirement may be totally different compared to others. So, some important parameters to be considered while buying UPS is listed and discussed here.
