This St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Art Lesson is a structured oil pastel and tempera paint resist project for elementary students. Students create a bold, expressive shamrock while exploring line, shape, texture, color blending and artistic decision-making.

It is made for elementary art classrooms, classroom teachers adding seasonal art, homeschool art and substitute-friendly lesson plans. Built-in literacy and reflection pages make it a good fit for St. Patrick’s Day themed weeks, and the finished shamrocks make a colorful March bulletin board display.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students construct a shamrock from heart-based forms, add expressive facial features to give it personality, and design swirling, organic background patterns in oil pastel. They then paint over the pastel with tempera for a resist effect, blending green and yellow paint for depth, and reflect on their creative choices through structured writing.

Skills and concepts: oil pastel techniques, tempera paint resist, color blending, organic shapes, texture through line, artistic reflection, personal expression and creative confidence. Everything is organized for projection, demonstration or printing.
