This comprehensive review presents a systematic analysis of the two main categories of health effects resulting from ionizing radiation exposure: deterministic (tissue reactions) and stochastic effects. Deterministic effects are characterized by a threshold dose below which the effect does not occur, with severity increasing as dose rises, and include conditions such as skin erythema, cataracts, and sterility. Stochastic effects, including cancer and heritable genetic mutations, are probabilistic in nature, have no threshold, and increase in probability with dose without affecting severity. The review examines the underlying mechanisms, dose-response relationships, and clinical manifestations of both effect types. It also discusses the Linear No-Threshold (LNT) model and the ALARA principle as foundational concepts in radiation protection, highlighting their role in establishing dose limits and safety standards.
