Maya and Malik’s Map of Choices

By Denton Johnson Sr.

At school, a test question may have one correct answer. But when Maya and Malik’s class sets out to turn an empty courtyard into a reading garden, the brother and sister discover that real-life goals can have more than one good route.

Maya gathers donations. Malik organizes a recycling team. Their plans look different, and at first they disagree about which one is best. Then rain and delays force them both to change course. Together with their classmates, they learn that a detour does not mean giving up—and that different ideas can make one shared goal stronger.

More Than One Right Way is an illustrated story and activity book for readers ages 8–10. After the story, eight guided activities invite children to name a goal, draw possible paths, plan for roadblocks, and use the Choice Compass to ask whether a decision is safe, honest, kind, and helpful.

It’s an encouraging book for children learning to think for themselves, work with others, and keep moving when their first plan does not work.
