Counting Sheep
You might say they were the lucky ones. But no, like all those who lived to tell the tale, the tale haunts them. Unlike the millions who saw what they saw and died, they saw what they saw and lived.
Since it happened, Marcus Beasley, a distinctly unlikeable adman, has shared a downtown boarding house with Grace and Rewiti, two equally lost, but far more morally acceptable refugees.
The only thing they have in common is the horror of what they witnessed and the crippling nightmares they now endure.
Then a ray of hope: word spreads of a mysterious place where memories can be erased and replaced with an entirely new one, gleefully nightmare-free.
Is it a scam? Is some lowlife feeding on the desperation of traumatised survivors?
Marcus, Grace and Rewiti set off through the carnage of a gridlocked and grisly downtown Auckland to find out.
Note: Counting Sheep is a novella - longer than a short story, but shorter than a novel.
