The construction of this necklace is fun from the start! It features a central elongated caliper cable flanked by twisted stitches and columns of dropped stitches. You can easily make a Fringe Element Necklace in an afternoon from your favorite scraps of DK yarn.

CONSTRUCTION
The pendant part of the necklace is worked from the bottom up. Although it starts off flat for a few rows, it quickly switches to faux knitting in the round. This method of circular knitting is normally used for fake swatching in the round. This pattern uses it to create the fringe and body of the pendant at the same time.
Just before binding off, designated stitches will be dropped all the way to the cast on edge. Dropping stitches is usually a mistake, but here it adds excitement and beauty to your knitting. Flat knitting is resumed just before the bindoff. You’ll then cut your knitting to create the side fringes.

Stitches are picked up at the upper corners of the pendant to make the i-cord chains. Tying the i-cord chains together into a bow behind the neck secures the necklace in place. If you make a longer of chain, there will be more wearing options from choker length to opera length.

Suggestions for modifications are included. The necklace width, length, and fringe can be as long or as short as you like. Because of the construction method used, the fringe is an integral part of the design.

KNITTING PATTERN DETAILS:

Size:
6“ / 15 cm wide, 2.5” / 6.5 cm fringe on either side, 4.5” / 11.5 cm tall in center , 12” / 30.5 cm long i-cord chain on each side, combined chain length 24” / 61 cm. Final necklace length is easily customizable.

Yarn weight:
DK weight yarn of any fiber can be used. Cotton, linen, or summer blends are recommended for maximum comfort around neck. Use of other fibers may require additional or less yarn and may affect drape. Tonal, solid, speckled, gradient, or lightly variegated work best. Use the “wilder” yarns like variegated or stripes for the chain and not the main section of the necklace.

Suggested yarn:
Debbie Bliss Cotton Denim DK (100% Cotton; DK; 218 yds / 200 m per ball): blue sample uses 1 ball of #2 New Denim.

Yardage:
36 yds / 32 m with 24” / 61 cm total i-cord chain; fringe is not optional.

Needles:
US # 8 (5 mm) is recommended or size to obtain gauge. 20” (51 cm) circular needle, two US # 8 (5 cm) dpns or above circulars for i-cord chain.

Gauge:
30 sts x 28 rows = 6“ / 15 cm x 4.5” / 11.5 cm in one repeat of the pattern. For this small project gauge is not critical. Be sure that the needles are the appropriate size for the chosen yarn.

Notions Required:
Tapestry needle, unique BOR stitch marker, and 2 stitch markers.

Skills Needed:
Yo, drop stitches, overhand knots, i-cord.
