Children live in a world of language: they may speak it, hear it, write it, read it, sing it and dream it! However, it can be difficult to get them to think analytically or critically about the language they use. Learning about another language can help them develop these skills, and Latin is a perfect language for this: it is foundational to several modern languages (e.g. French, Spanish, Italian) and its words have infiltrated English. By learning about Latin, children can develop an awareness of the components of language, begin to appreciate the diversity of words in English and can enjoy "cracking the code" of another language, which can lead on to study in a modern language (or Latin!)..

Latin for Children is a series of 20 ready-to-use worksheets designed to introduce 8 to 12 year-olds to Latin words, many of which they will recognize from English. It can be used for other ages too. This is not a course in learning Latin but an introduction to Latin words and some simple grammar. The aims of Latin for Children are to:

  • ·        Introduce children to another language.
  • ·        Build Latin vocabulary and introduce Latin grammar.
  • ·        Increase awareness of the Latin roots of English words.
  • ·        Provide a foundation for possible later study of Latin.

Latin for Children is ideal for:

  • homeschooling
  • other parents who want to push their children further than their school might
  • teachers who need a handy activity.

Each worksheet is printable and ready to go. It can take children 10–20 minutes, depending on their age and engagement. Each worksheet contains an extension option for older or advanced students. The workbook also includes notes for supervising adults, an Introduction, four revision exercises, and a vocabulary list. Some grammar concepts are also covered.
