About the artwork

Hiroshige made this view of the plum garden at Kamata for One Hundred Famous Views of Edo in 1857. Plum blossom was the first flower of the Japanese year, and Edo residents walked out to Kamata to see it. Twisted trunks, a pink evening sky and the edge of a palanquin in the foreground make it a lovely spring piece.
