Kisspeptin is a naturally occurring peptide hormone that acts as a master regulator of the human reproductive system.

How Kisspeptin Works

  • Master Switch: It is encoded by the KISS1 gene and produced mainly in the hypothalamus region of the brain.
  • Hormone Trigger: Kisspeptin binds to the kisspeptin receptor (KISS1R) to stimulate the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
  • Cascading Effects: GnRH signals the pituitary gland to release luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which control testosterone and estrogen production.

Key Functions and Roles

  • Puberty and Fertility: It triggers the onset of puberty and drives reproductive functions like ovulation and sperm production.
  • Metabolism: Research shows it also plays a role in regulating energy balance and insulin secretion in the pancreas.
  • Metastasis Suppression: It was originally named metastin because it was first discovered for its ability to suppress cancer cell spreading
