The Misattuned Mind

When nothing ever feels good enough

You finish the work, yet relief never lasts. You prepare thoroughly, but still wonder whether you've missed something. You replay conversations long after they've ended. You receive appreciation, and before long you're looking for the next opportunity to prove yourself.

Most explanations point to perfectionism, low self-esteem or a lack of confidence.

They describe what happens, but not why it keeps happening.

In The Misattuned Mind, I introduce a different possibility. What if the problem is not that you expect too much of yourself, but that somewhere along the way you lost the ability to sense when you've finally done enough ?

There is a subtle form of relational mismatch called misattunement. When, early in life, your thoughts, emotions or needs are repeatedly misunderstood, the nervous system can lose its ability to recognise connection, safety and acceptance. When those signals don't fully register, the search continues. Overthinking, people-pleasing, approval-seeking, anger, perfectionism and feeling stuck are not separate problems. They are different expressions of the same unresolved pattern.

Drawing on developmental psychology, attachment theory, neuroscience and years of working with clients, I uncover the hidden sequence that links early relational experiences to the way we think, decide and relate as adults.

If you've spent years trying to change your thoughts, your habits or your confidence without understanding why the feeling of "enough" remains out of reach, this essay offers a different explanation.

Sometimes the most important edit is not of your behaviour, but of the story your nervous system has been acting out.
