Christmas Writing Practice Directed Drawing Christmas Paragraph Writing and Draw
This Christmas Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with paragraph writing practice for grade 2 to 5 students. On each page, students follow a directed drawing, create a Christmas-themed illustration, and then write a paragraph inspired by their artwork.
Drawing first means students are not staring at a blank page. They have something visual and personal to describe, explain or imagine. The drawings include Santa Claus, reindeer, Christmas tree, elf, gingerbread man, candy cane, mistletoe, stocking, Christmas light, wreath, ornament, bear, penguin, bell, candle, present, gingerbread house, Christmas sweater, dove and cardinal. The directed drawings are created by Kathleen McGiveron (Ms Artastic).

HOW TO USE IT
Use the pages for daily writing practice, morning work, writing centers, early finishers, sub plans or homeschool writing practice. Print single pages as you need them, or turn the set into a Christmas write and draw booklet that students work through over December.
Because the writing comes from their own artwork, students feel ownership over it. They can describe what they drew, add details, set a scene or imagine a character, which makes it especially helpful for reluctant writers and visual learners.
FAQ
Who is this for?
Classroom teachers, homeschool educators, substitute teachers and art teachers working with grade 2 to 5 students.
What kind of writing does it support?
Paragraph writing. Students complete a directed drawing and then write a paragraph inspired by their artwork.
How long does each page take?
It depends on the student, your writing expectations and how much detail they add. One page may fit in one class or writing block, while detailed drawings and polished paragraphs may take longer.
Is it editable?
No. It is a non-editable PDF.
Do students need to be strong artists?
No. The drawing steps are there to help students feel successful, and they can add their own creative details before they write.
