When life is a series of riptides, yarn can be a life jacket. Delicate stitches and decadent fibers make it just a bit easier to withstand the current, so wrap yourself in the Riptide Scarf and hold on tight until the pressure lets up.

The scarf uses just sc, dc, and ch, for a beginner friendly project. It’s super adjustable and uses less than half a skein, making it a perfect choice for using up scraps!

Sample

Sample used Dragonfly Fibers Dharma (fingering weight; 50%yak/50% silk; 480yds/113g), 83yds/20g in Poseidon (color A), 83yds/20g in Riptide (color B)

Gauge

1 pattern repeat = 2”/5cm high and 1.25”/3cm across. Gauge swatch is worked flat and measurements are taken after blocking. Do not stretch the fabric when checking gauge. Gauge is not essential as a scarf that is slightly larger or smaller will still fit nicely, and the scarf can also be easily adjusted in width and length. Differences in gauge will change the finished size and will also impact the yardage required.

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors

The pattern calls for 166yds/152m/40g fingering weight yarn total; 83yds/76m/20g in each of two coordinating colors. It can easily be adjusted to work with any yarn or yardage.

The sample was made in fingering weight, but the scarf is easily adjustable and does well in anything from lace to worsted weight. It’s an ideal scrappy project that can be worked in any number of colors and to any yardage. The lace will prevent pooling, but the variegation will obscure the stitch. The stitch pattern works best with a solid, semi-solid, gradient, or self striping yarn.

Skills Required

ch, sc, dc, Counting rows and stitches; Working flat; Skipping stitches; Whipstitch (optional)

Construction

The sample is worked with two colors. The first color is worked in one piece, and then the second color is attached to the unworked side of the first row and worked to directly mirror the first color. The scarf is then optionally seamed together.

Customizations

Notes are included for adjusting the following:
Making the scarf narrower/wider; making the scarf longer/shorter; working any number of colors; working it as a scarf without seaming

Overview of the Finished Object

A lacy scarf with a simple repeat that repeats throughout the scarf. Half the scarf is aqua and the other half is navy, in the photos the colors play together based on how the scarf is styled.
