Civil Liberties and Civil Rights Unit 6: Worksheets, Readings & Activities
Teach civil liberties and civil rights with ten lessons for general high school government. Students read about freedoms and equal treatment, trace how rights reached the states, and use major Supreme Court cases to explain changes in constitutional protection.
The unit mixes full articles with basic notes templates, open graphic organizers, a timeline, case comparisons, matching, clue games, and an optional word search. Supplied readings and teacher keys give you a starting point without needing a textbook or student internet research.
What students work through
• Freedoms, rights, and government action: a two-page opening article with a branching organizer or open notes.
• The Bill of Rights and First Amendment: an amendment reference, matching or notes, a two-page article, a five-freedoms web, and applications.
• Rights reach the states: Reconstruction and incorporation readings, a timeline, and comparison practice.
• Speech, religion, and criminal procedure: Schenck, Engel, Texas v. Johnson, Mapp, Miranda, and Gideon, with later developments and limits explained.
• Equal protection and changing rulings: Brown, Hernandez, civil rights law, Roe and Dobbs, and Grutter and Students for Fair Admissions, supported by readings and analysis.
• Review and assessment: guided notes, a 13-case matching review, a clue game, an optional eight-term word search, a 20-point assessment, and a corrections page.
What's in the download
One ZIP contains four PDFs and font notices:
• A two-page Start Here guide with file access, printing, classroom use, and support.
• The full 66-page unit: 39 student pages and 27 teacher/reference pages with the optional ten-lesson print map, teacher guides, answer keys, scoring guidance, and sources.
• A separate 39-page student print copy.
• A separate 27-page teacher print copy.
The split files repeat pages from the full packet; they are not additional activities. The 39 student pages include two alternatives and two optional activities. The default route uses 35 pages, including corrections. Files are printable, non-fillable US Letter PDFs. Editable Word, Google Docs, and slide files are not included.
Planning and classroom use
Plan for ten 45-55 minute lessons, adjusting for your students' reading and discussion needs. Times are estimates. Students benefit from knowing the three branches and the difference between federal and state government. Teacher guidance includes reading supports, modeling suggestions, and independent-work options.
You'll need a device to extract the ZIP and open the PDFs, access to a printer, and student writing supplies. Print at Actual Size or 100%, using Fit if your printer clips an edge. The Start Here guide maps activity titles to positions in the student and full-unit PDFs. Student activities work offline.
The assessment has 12 multiple-choice items and two short responses: 20 points total, or multiply by five for a percentage. A model and four-point rubric accompany each short response. Corrections support follow-up teaching and are separate from the original score.
