This introductory exercise is designed to help children begin practising the skill of shifting their focus away from anxious thoughts and onto the world around them. Many children with social anxiety find that their attention gets “stuck” on worries about how they look, sound, or what others might think. This can make social situations feel overwhelming.

Through simple, playful activities such as listening for different sounds, spotting objects in the environment, or noticing details in conversations, this worksheet helps children learn that they can guide their attention, rather than letting their worries take control. The exercise provides clear instructions, gentle prompts, and space for reflection so children can notice how changing their focus affects how they feel.

This activity is ideal as a first step in attention training. It can be used in sessions with therapists, as homework practice, or as a supportive tool for parents and teachers. By starting with small, achievable tasks, children build confidence in their ability to manage anxiety and take an important step towards reducing self-focused attention.
