How it teaches. Reflective practice: turning the lens on your own culture, assumptions and the power you carry. Coaching: one small move named out loud, "This week I will". Action learning at work: practised on shift, not in a workshop. Signs of movement, not a test. The guides are not an accredited or assessed course.
Where I stand. I write this as a white practitioner, and I'll say so plainly. Not by way of apology, but as a journeyman: still on the road, doing my own work through personal and critical reflection. Cultural safety, or kawa whakaruruhau, was named and developed in Aotearoa New Zealand by Irihapeti Ramsden, a Māori nurse and educator. Her call wasn't to learn more about other people. It was to turn the lens back on ourselves. And whether care feels safe, she said, is decided by the person receiving it, never by us. What cultural safety is remains for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to define. My part, and yours, is the reflection.
