Tokyo History Hunt. A 52 page investigation for ages 11 to 13. We lived in Japan before the kids came along, and this is the Tokyo I wanted them to be able to read.

Six stops, and each one is a case. Nihonbashi, the bridge named in 1604 as the starting point of the five great routes, with Edo distances still measured from it and an expressway now running over the top. Senso-ji, a temple whose story starts with two fishermen and a statue in the Sumida River in 628, and a living community Avilene learns to observe respectfully. The Imperial Palace East Gardens, what is left of Edo Castle, where gates, moats and stone ramparts still control how you move even though the keep is gone. Tokyo Station, opened in 1914, bombed in 1945, restored by 2012, and Nicole's case about what restoration actually chooses to keep. Tsukiji, constructed land, where Jake follows one ingredient backward through every fisher, maker and driver behind it. And the National Diet, where in April 1946 Japanese women voted and stood for election for the first time.

At every stop your kid reads the real history in two solid paragraphs, steps into a flashback, then does the investigator's job. Notice. Compare. Decode. Sketch. Gather evidence. Our family is on the page doing the same thing, so it reads like joining an adventure, not a textbook.

A note for parents. Senso-ji is a working temple and Tsukiji is a working market, and the book says so plainly: observe respectfully, ask before photographs, keep the lanes clear. That's on purpose.
