Is it, sir? You soon give in. How stern you look now! Your eyebrows have become as thick as my finger, and your forehead resembles what, in some very astonishing poetry, I once saw styled, ‘a blue-piled thunderloft.’ That will be your married look, sir, I suppose?”

Jane Eyre chapter 24, quoting Lines from ‘The Demoniac, a poem published in 1830 by Thomas Aird: a reference to the towering cumulonimbus storm clouds: "Dark as the blue-piled thunder-lofts then grew his forehead high; And gleam’d like their vein’d lightnings, rash and passionate, his eye."

Thunderloft are DK socks in a simple knit and purl pattern. When the clouds are piled deep in the sky and the time has come to take cover, these soft and luxurious house or boot socks are the perfect fireside project. Naturally, once finished, they also make the ideal way to hibernate your toes.

Knit in a yarn the colour of a brooding sky with a stitch pattern reminiscent of Cumulonimbus forming you can get all the drama of storm clouds whilst staying warm and dry.

These are toe-up with a wedge toe and an afterthought heel with a mini short row gusset. These can be knit two at a time easily if you like to work this way as I did - instructions are for one at a time.
