Abstract

This paper presents conceptual and practical drivers towards the strategic direction of art school. Drawing on the author’s 2025 GLAD conference presentation 'What Drives the Art School of the Future?', a series of interconnected themes contribute to both staff and student collaboration, vision; structure and detail; tribal identity, the alignment of roles and strengths; confidence, productive struggle; the scale of delusion; seasonal hosting; reflective models; avoiding the jaded dead-zone, appropriate energy; waste management; technology as tool; short-circuits; top-line events series; and a methodology of making visible.

The paper explores a number of interrelated themes through a series of questions and provocations including… what are the confidence-building mechanisms that empower emerging artists through the currencies of exhibition-making? What are the relevant skills in art school? What is the balance between skill and disruption, freedom and struggle, and which are necessary to produce good art? What is the capacity of the art school academic in today’s world and are they activated in this community? Are they deluded just enough, to positively disrupt the art student experience without entering the jaded dead-zone? Can art schools become seasonal hosts for established art markets and invite the curatorial frontline into the institution? Can we embed residencies, high-quality gallery programs and top-line symposiums to actively present ‘how to…’ within our walls? How best to prepare polymathic graduates for multiple directions in an ever-changing working world? These themes emphasise hybrid infrastructures, polymathic graduate formation, and public-facing pedagogies.
