The Thanksgiving Turkey Art Lesson is a low-prep art and literacy lesson for Kindergarten to Grade 3. Students follow a step-by-step tutorial to create a colorful turkey with wax crayons or oil pastels and watercolor or tempera paint, then reflect on what they are thankful for through reading and writing.

The lesson brings together drawing, painting and writing with character education and reading comprehension, all themed around thankfulness and kindness. Along the way, students practice fine motor skills, following directions, vocabulary and reflection, and finish with a turkey artwork and a written reflection to display.

Review the lesson plan and gather the art supplies: wax crayons or oil pastels, watercolor or tempera paint cakes, paintbrushes and water containers, yellow or orange construction paper, and card stock or thick drawing paper. Print the student handouts, puzzle hook and reflection pages, then project the step-by-step pages for demonstration or student follow-along.

Students can complete the writing and comprehension pieces as an art extension or a literacy center. Use it as a Thanksgiving or fall art project, a cross-curricular art and literacy lesson, sub plans, homeschool art and reading, or an SEL and gratitude reflection project.
