Burstling

The size M (variegated) samples were knit using the TROPICAL PARADISE - Purple and TROPICAL PARADISE - Pink kits by Cat & Sparrow Australia. Burstling is a crescent shaped shawl designed for one colourful fingering weight (4ply) yarn and a contrasting solid colour to make it pop. A great pattern for any dye style but especially gradient and variegated yarns which show the colour move through the body of the shawl against a solid background particularly well. It is a great stash-buster for any lovely minis and pretty leftovers you might have from other projects, especially if you line them up in a gradient/fade style arrangement.

This is a super-relaxing knit, with simple stitchwork for ease and fun, and short sections to keep you engaged while you enjoy the colours of your yarn.

This pattern comes in 2 sizes, M and (L) and contains full written instructions with stitch counts for every row, and a tick-sheet showing all the details (including colour-placement) to work the whole pattern from once started.

Size M (variegated sample)

MC (variegated): 100g Cat & Sparrow Australia Bea 4ply at 410m/448yd per 100g/3.5oz. (sample used approx. 83g col. Tropic of Capricorn). 

CC (solid): 100g Cat & Sparrow Australia Bea 4ply at 410m/448yd per 100g/3.5oz. (sample used approx. 77g col. Nymphaea). 

Size L (gradient sample)

MC (gradient): 1 skein of Bilum Yarns Namba2 at 479m/524yd per 120g/4.23oz (sample used approx. 124g (my skein was over 120g see note 1) col. Illes #15). 

CC (solid): 1 skein of Bilum Yarns Namba2 at 479m/524yd per 120g/4.23oz (sample used approx. 111g col. Jeans Blue Dark #472-3).

Needles & Notions

Pair of 3.75mm (US 5) needles for Cat & Sparrow Australia Bea or 3.5mm (US 4) needles for Bilum Namba2. I like to use an 80cm/31.5" circular needle set but straight are fine also. 2 stitch markers. Tapestry needle.

Size M (variegated sample): 45cm (18") deep at centre x 224cm (88") wide along top edge. 

Size L (gradient sample): 46cm (18") deep at centre x 216cm (85") wide along top edge. 

Tension/Gauge

Size M (variegated sample): 20 sts x 38 rows to 10cm (4") over garter and mosaic pattern on 3.75mm (US 5) needles, after blocking. 

Size L (gradient sample): 22 sts x 38 rows to 10cm (4") over garter and mosaic pattern on 3.5mm (US 4) needles, after blocking.
