Area tells us how much space is inside a shape. To find the area of a rectangle, multiply the length times the width:

A = l \times w

A square is a special rectangle with all sides equal. To find the area of a square, multiply one side by itself:

A = s^2

Finding area helps students measure floors, gardens, rooms, and other flat surfaces. A common mistake students make is adding the sides instead of multiplying or confusing area with perimeter. Remember: area measures the space inside the shape using square units.
