This letter should be sent by the consumer to a debt collector to challenge the validity of an alleged debt. Under the Fair Debt Collections Act (FDCPA), debt collectors are legally required to provide specific documentation and evidence that proves the debt to be legitimate within 30 days of receipt of the letter.

During this 30-day period, the debt collector must cease all collection activities, including phone calls and reporting to credit bureaus. Collection activities may not resume until the customer receives the requested information validating the debt.

It is best to include your wet signature above your printed name on letters of this nature. Dispute letters should also be sent to creditors via Certified Mail with a Return Receipt. Certified Mail with a Return Receipt gives individuals the option to know that the dispute letter has been received by the creditor as well as the date that the dispute letter was received.

Within this letter: please include your account number or reference number. If you do not have your account number, then your social security number or customer number can be used as your reference number. Typically, your account number or customer number can be found on any previous debt collection correspondence from the creditor.
