68 checks, decisions and buys. Everything between "I should get a rifle" and walking out with the right one.

This is the conversation you want to have before you drive to a gun show with cash in your pocket.

WHAT'S INSIDE

8 modules, 68 numbered checks:

• Lever, bolt or semi — what each one actually costs you

• The calibers that stay on the shelf in a shortage

• Reading a used gun: bore, action, stock, stamps (22 checks, in the order you perform them)

• Where the deals actually are

• Walk-away flags: the eight things that mean leave it

• Three upgrades worth paying for, ten that are not

• Zeroing without a range membership

• Storage that does not ruin steel

THE TWO CHECKS NOBODY DOES

Check 23 — the dented magazine tube. The follower has to travel that whole tube. A dent stops it dead, and you get a rifle that feeds two rounds and jams. The seller calls it "just needs a little work."

Check 26 — the hairline crack at the stock wrist, behind the tang. The most commonly hidden defect on old lever guns, because a coat of oil disguises it perfectly.

Between them, these two fail more used lever guns than anything except a ruined bore. Almost nobody checks either.

ALSO INCLUDED

• Six annotated diagrams — the inspection map, bore, crown, wrist, magazine tube

• Five model deep-dives — Marlin 336, Winchester 94, Henry side gate, Rossi R92, Mossberg 464. Production eras, what the stamps are worth, what goes wrong with each

• An index of all 68 checks

WHY THERE ARE NO PRICES IN THIS BOOK

Because used prices are local and they move — a printed table is wrong somewhere on the day it ships. Check 39 shows you how to build a current price band for any model in about twenty minutes, using completed sales instead of asking prices. Those numbers beat any published table, because they are your market and this month.
