A dry camp. A thirsty people. Help in an unexpected place.

What can we do when we need help and feel worried about asking?

Moses and the travelling families reach Rephidim, but there is no water for them to drink. The people are thirsty and afraid. Their worried voices become cross, and Moses asks God for help. With some of Israel's elders beside him, he follows the instructions at the rock in Horeb. Water comes out so the people can drink.

In a separate present-day story, Eli tells Mum that his water bottle is empty. She provides fresh drinking water before their Bible reading begins. Later, Eli, Maya and Mum prepare for another walk and practise speaking about what they need.

Moses and the Water from the Rock is Book 22 in Little Bible Explorers by Steve Lewis, an illustrated Bible retelling for children aged 3-8, designed for reading with a grown-up.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Children aged 3-8 with parents, carers or teachers who have read the grown-up notes first. Share during family Bible reading, home learning or guided Sunday school. Younger children can explore the pictures, while older children can discuss the questions and read the Bible passage with an adult.

A NOTE FOR GROWN-UPS

Please read Exodus 17:1-7 and the book's grown-up notes before sharing. This book follows the water-from-the-rock account in Exodus 17, not the later account in Numbers 20. The instructions and consequences differ; the book does not combine them.

The Bible passage includes quarrelling, testing God and Moses's fear that he might be stoned. This gentle retelling acknowledges real thirst and worried voices, briefly explains the place names Massah and Meribah, and does not dramatise the threat or repeat the full fear of death. The battle in Exodus 17:8-16 is outside this book's focus.

Children's needs deserve practical care. Do not shame children for reporting thirst or distress, and do not make drinking water depend on asking politely. Eli receives water before the Bible reading. Words, gestures and pictures can all help a child ask a trusted grown-up for support.

The rock event belongs to this Bible account, not a method to copy. Never encourage children to hit rocks, taste unfamiliar water or try to make water safe with a stick. Adults provide safe drinking water. Both activities use paper, drawing or conversation only.

Prayer can accompany action and appropriate help. This book does not promise a miraculous result whenever someone prays.

Bible focus: Exodus 17:1-7, read in its wider context. Eli, Maya and Mum are fictional present-day characters. Ancient clothes, landscapes and family water scenes are artistic interpretations. Illustrations were created with AI assistance and reviewed for this edition.
