Finding the Names, Volume One — Installment 70: 234 more entries transcribed name by name from Roll 8 (New Orleans Inward Manifests, 1837–1841; National Archives Microfilm Publication M1895, NAID 173898130), images 961–1,080. 230 named, 4 unnamed, on 59 manifests, dated December 1840 to December 1841 — with one stray paper of August 1842 filed among them. FREE.

Inside: the brig Long Island's fifty from Richmond against her certificate's "Forty nine" — Inspector Binney's endorsement explains her: "Delphia Jordan not shipped"; the ship Tippecanoe's three separate two-person manifests sworn the same day under Maryland term-service oaths; Mobile's bare handwritten list of twenty-three — names, ages, color, height, and nothing else; a St. Mark certificate that names an owner but leaves the number blank, his people's table nowhere in the filming; women carried to Havana as body servants under a printed oath that still says "bring him back"; and a boy whose age is written out as the word "Ten," matched in person to his paper at the English Turn.

This installment is one part of a free series. The companion guide, Finding the Names: A Free Guide to the Public Records of America's Slave Trade, is free here: https://payhip.com/b/Ok8x9 — and the Complete Set (guide + every installment so far, one ZIP, updated with each new installment) is free here: https://payhip.com/b/Aopbl

Every entry was transcribed by hand from the National Archives' own scans of the original manifests. Where a manifest and its certificate disagree, both readings are printed. Nothing is guessed and nobody is tidied away.
