A brilliant companion to Fritze’s tuba studies, these 25 Characteristic Etudes give euphonium players the same kind of musical, technically rewarding material in a range better suited to the instrument.

Some of the studies are closely related to those in the tuba book, but are placed in a more euphonium-friendly register. They’re great for working on articulation, flexibility, phrasing, stamina, control and musical style without ever feeling like dry technical exercises.

I chose this book because I think Fritze’s studies deserve to be much better known in the UK. They’re characterful, enjoyable to practise and useful for developing players right through to advanced musicians.

It’s also worth looking at the 20 Characteristic Etudes for Tuba if you want to spend more time specifically developing the low and middle register. There’s some crossover between the two books, but the different ranges make them useful for quite different areas of your playing.

Fritze Etude No. 2

The stunning Etude no. 2 from 20 Characteristic Etudes for Tuba. Based on Bach's cello suite, this etude requires a real stronghold of smooth, silky sound gliding across the tuba range.
