Have you ever seen one of those collages that looks like it’s made of solid blocks of color, and then when you get close you see each section is actually made of many smaller images? As you move closer, you can see how the combination of different designs and textures gives the colors incredible depth and vibrancy. The Patchwork Fade Cowl plays with this concept. Starting with a provisional cast on, the cowl is created by working a long tube of 30 stripes, each of which is worked in one of five stitch patterns - purl ridges, nupps, seed stitch, stockinette, or checkerboard. The ends of the tube are then grafted together with Kitchener stitch to create an oversized cowl that is large enough to be looped twice around the neck if desired. The pattern sample features a color fade of 30 fingering weight mini-skeins from the 2021 Trilogy Yarns Christmas in July Advent Calendar. If you’re substituting other yarn, you can either use scraps of fingering weight yarn in 30 different colors or use a smaller number of colors and repeat them throughout the cowl. While the original pattern was designed to feature a color fade, feel free to experiment with color choice and placement!

Size: Tube circumference is approximately 20 in / 51 cm (which means the width will be approximately 10 in / 25.5 cm). Length of the tube is approximately 72 in / 183 cm before grafting together the ends and 36 in / 91.5 cm after grafting together the ends. The final measurements will vary based on how gently or aggressively you choose to block.

Yarn: The sample uses 30 mini-skeins of Trilogy Yarns Glamorous 80 yds / 73 m each (80% Superwash Merino, 20% Nylon; 0.7 oz / 20 g). If you are substituting other fingering weight yarn, you will need 30 scraps of approx. 65 yd / 59.5 m each (which includes some waste yardage/meterage factored in if you match the gauge given below), for a total of approx. 1950 yds / 1783 m.

Gauge: 24 sts / 38 rounds to 4” / 10 cm in blocked Stockinette Stitch pattern

Needles: Circular or DPN size US 4 / 3.5 mm needles, or whatever attains gauge. (You will need a second set of needles to graft together the two ends of the tube with Kitchener stitch.)

Notions: Darning needle, stitch marker, stitch holder or waste yarn for provisional cast on, crochet hook (optional, depending on what method of provisional cast on you’ll be working as well as whether you want to use a hook to tighten stitches around nupps)
