Regrettably, this film tends to pack most of its highlights into the trailers, leaving behind a somewhat sterile portrayal of the life of the vibrant and visionary man. While Kingsley Ben-Amir delivers a charismatic performance, the other characters appear underdeveloped and merely present to fill the gaps. The lack of context makes it difficult to comprehend why he is revered on his home island of Jamaica initially. The abrupt transitions from a political hotbed to London and Delaware leave little room for establishment. The final twenty minutes showcase more of his musical talents, presented enthusiastically by KBA, but the overall portrayal feels superficial. James Norton seems to be there for the music, while Lashana Lynch fails to leave a lasting impression. Despite potential involvement from his son Ziggy, the film falls short in delivering a compelling narrative that should have been a no-brainer politically, musically, and culturally. Unfortunately, this chronology merely skims the surface of his life, resembling a stylus on a well-worn vinyl record. It's a shame.
