The chill of a November evening wrapped around me like a shroud as I made my way through the winding streets toward my friends’ house. My breath hung in the air, a puff of white dissipating quickly into the stillness of the encroaching night. The weak sunlight had long since surrendered to the icy grip of frost that had claimed the world, leaving remnants of autumn's splendor slick with frostbite.

As I approached the familiar gate, I felt a stirring excitement; evenings spent at the Kingsley residence were a cherished tradition. Its weathered facade was a beacon of warmth, promising not just a fire crackling with life but also the sweet embrace of a glass of Madeira—a concoction rooted deep in family history, tracing back to an isolated island further west in the Atlantic. The bloodlines of the Kingsleys carried tales of seafaring ancestors and spirits of the ocean, stories that danced between whispers and laughter over this very drink.

I rapped my knuckles against the door, the sound swallowed by the thickening fog that began to curl around the old oak trees lining their property. The moment I stepped inside, I was enveloped by the cozy atmosphere. A golden glow radiated from the fireplace, casting playful shadows on the walls where photographs of generations past hung like silent sentinels.
