​This poem was written for the senior dogs who move a little slower now, but whose presence fills the room more than ever. It’s for the muzzles that have turned to silver and the bond that only grows deeper as the chapters of our lives together reach their twilight.

Your soft head, once shiny black,

has faded grey with drifting years;

as if you are running out of ink.

I hope there is enough left

for a few more chapters together.

The pages turn

more slowly now

As we sit

with your paw in my hand,

it feels as though nothing has changed,

but everything is different.

I will never be the same

after loving you.

And I couldn't be more grateful.
