"Going to the Pictures" - a history of cinema in Inverclyde

The first showing of ‘the pictures’ in Greenock was in the Town Hall in 1897. Since then they have been shown in numerous locations throughout the area. This book, an updated version of the 1997 publication, takes an in-depth look at the cinemas of Greenock, Port Glasgow and Gourock over the intervening years. The book is illustrated throughout with photographs and adverts as well as personal memories of the locals who went to the cinema. An experience that the vast majority of us shared. The Gaumont, the Regal, La Scala, Odeon, Pavilion, Plaza, The Central, The Gourock Picture House and the BB - all names that conjure up memories of youth and times past.
