The brig Gold Hunter out of Richmond carries 207 rows on five sheets against her clerk's own written total of "Two hundred & Three" — and her papers disagree about who died. The table marks Sam, 23, with "died" in the sex column and "Died on the Passage" against his line; Inspector Horne's endorsement says the dead man was Tom: "Two that they had different names." Both readings stand in these pages, as written.
The brig Aurora out of Savannah lost a woman on the passage. Her master's oath swears no change "except one woman drowned"; her table carries the word "drowned" beside the lines of Phillis, 16 — her name marked with an X — and Edward, 9. The oath's "woman" points to Phillis; the note's placement cannot be made certain, and it is printed as it lies. Her 21 match the certificate's "Six females and fifteen Males" exactly.
Maryland's term-service trade fills two brigs: the Arctic brings 57 from Baltimore and St. Mary's, sold for a term of years, not for life, nearly all under full surnames — Sally Green's three children named in one bracket: Jackson, Jesse, and Rachel. The Catharine brings 23 more of the same.
Also in these pages: Dick, 27, "Died at Sea March 1st" on the Mary Ann; Moses on the Katharine, "No such man on board" at both inspections; Chloe, whose age is entered in words — "at the breast"; Patmick, struck through in full while the collector corrected his certificate from "Three" to "Two"; Katy, 45, with Sandy, 4, and an infant at the breast.
Every entry gives the name as written, sex, age, height, class as written, shipper or owner, and residence, vessel by vessel, with an alphabetical index. Where a manifest and its certificate disagree, both readings are printed — disagreements and all. The free guide and the Complete Set download hold the guide and every installment so far in one file.
