At some point, somebody may have to stand up in a room and explain what you were like.

It seems only fair that you should be allowed to contribute.

My Eulogy File is a downloadable guided workbook that helps you collect the stories, people, memories, peculiarities, opinions, contradictions, and ordinary details that make your life recognisably yours.

You can use it to write your own eulogy.

Or you can leave the actual writing to somebody else and simply make sure they have much better material to work with.

Because this isn’t LinkedIn for dead people.

Your eulogy doesn’t need every job you’ve had, every qualification you’ve earned, or a chronological account of everywhere you’ve lived.

It needs you.

Inside My Eulogy File

The workbook takes you through ten chapters:

1. Start Here

Decide what you actually want to leave behind.

2. The Outline of My Life

Names, places, family, work, and the basic shape of your life.

3. My People

The people who actually mattered, including the relationships that don’t fit neatly onto a family tree.

4. This Is Me

Personality, habits, peculiarities, likes, dislikes, contradictions, and all the small stuff that makes you recognisable.

5. The Stories

The disasters, triumphs, ordinary moments, and stories worth keeping.

6. What Mattered

What you cared about, what you’re proud of, what you learned, and what you hope was a little different because you were here.

7. The Bits That Don’t Fit Neatly

Mistakes, wrong turns, difficult periods, regrets, things you survived, and things you don’t want tidied into a nicer story.

8. For God’s Sake, Don’t Say That

Your editorial instructions for after you’re dead. What should they say? What shouldn’t they say? And what would make you come back and haunt them?

9. What I’d Like to Leave With You

Messages, thanks, explanations, apologies if you want them, things you’re absolutely not sorry about, and anything else you’d like to say in your own words.

10. My Eulogy

Bring everything together and, if you want to, write the actual thing.

There’s also a When You Need This section written specifically for whoever eventually finds your File, explaining how to use what you’ve left behind when the time comes.

How it works

This isn’t a fillable form with four lines for you to summarise a forty-year relationship.

You’ll receive the questions, prompts, and guidance as a PDF download.

Keep your answers separately in a notebook, ring binder, folder, digital document, or whatever works for you.

One question might need two words.

Another might unexpectedly produce six pages.

The formatting doesn’t get to decide when you’ve said enough.

You don’t need to work through it in order.

You don’t need to answer everything.

And you don’t have to write a finished eulogy.

Leave a finished version, a draft, a collection of stories, instructions, or simply enough of yourself that the person eventually writing about you isn’t starting from scratch.
