Quarterly Estimated Tax Calculator 2026 — 1099 / Self-Employed Tax Planner (Excel + Google Sheets)

human designer. Every formula in it is visible and auditable — please check the
math before you rely on it. Not tax advice.
------------------------------------------------------------
A quarterly estimated-tax and cash-runway model for US self-employed people,
for tax year 2026. Built for one thing: getting the math right.
Most tax templates are an income-and-expense tracker with a flat 15.3% bolted on
the end. This one actually models the mechanics:
- Self-employment tax on the correct base (92.35% of net earnings, not gross
profit), with Social Security capped at the 2026 wage base of $184,500 — and
your W-2 wages correctly consume that cap first, which is where most templates
quietly overcharge you.
- The deduction for one-half of SE tax flowing through into your income-tax
estimate, not just sitting on its own line.
- Additional Medicare Tax at 0.9% above $200,000 / $250,000.
- The QBI (Section 199A) deduction, including the $400 minimum added for 2026 —
and an honest warning plus an override cell when your income goes above the
phase-out threshold, instead of a wrong number presented confidently.
- Safe harbor done properly: 90% of this year's tax vs. 100% of last year's —
or 110% if your prior-year AGI was over $150,000. That last rule is the one
that catches people, and most templates don't have it at all.
- A visible seven-row tax-bracket ladder, so you can audit the income tax line
by hand instead of trusting a hidden lookup.
WHAT'S INSIDE (6 tabs)
- Start Here — what it does, what it doesn't, how to use it
- Inputs — every light-blue cell, nothing hidden
- Tax Estimate — the whole calculation, one labelled line at a time
- Quarterly Plan — the four 2026 due dates, what to pay, catch-up if behind
- Runway — what % of every payment to set aside, and how many months your cash lasts
- Rates 2026 — every hard-coded number in one place, each with its source
The Rates tab means you can roll this forward yourself: replace the brackets and
thresholds for a future tax year and the rest of the workbook updates.
WHAT IT DOES NOT DO — stated up front, not buried
- Single and Married Filing Jointly only. Head of Household is not supported.
- Federal estimated tax. State and local tax is a single flat rate you enter,
not a real state calculation.
- QBI above the phase-out threshold is flagged, not computed — the real rule
depends on W-2 wages paid and business property basis.
- One self-employed person (a spouse's W-2 income is supported).
- Not a substitute for a tax professional, and not tax advice.
HOW THE MATH WAS CHECKED
Test cases were computed by hand first, then the workbook's real formulas were
recalculated in a spreadsheet engine and compared against them — 89 checks,
zero failures. The bracket ladder and every constant's source are left on the
face of the sheet so you can repeat the audit yourself.
FORMAT
Microsoft Excel .xlsx. Instant digital download, no physical item shipped. The
file you receive is empty and ready for your numbers — the example figures in
the photos are there to show you what the sheet does, not what you get. It is
built and tested for Microsoft Excel, and it has also been opened in Google
Sheets and every formula chain re-derived there: no error cells, the number
formats hold, and the filing-status dropdown arrives as real data validation.
It opens in LibreOffice Calc too.
Because this is an instant download, all sales are final — but if you find a
formula that is wrong, message me and it will be fixed and re-sent.
