This Watermelon Name Art Project is a cheerful Back to School art lesson that combines name art, all about me art and contemporary collage style art making. Students paint an abstract blue background, create separate watermelon slice elements, design a personalized name card, and then put everything together into one bright, finished artwork.

It is a good fit for classroom teachers, art teachers and homeschool educators who want a first week of school project that helps students share who they are. Students explore line, shape, space, texture, color, form and value while working with paint, oil pastel, collage style layering and personal lettering. Because the pieces are made separately and assembled at the end, the project stays manageable to teach.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Students practice name art and lettering, all about me expression, tint and hue, and oil pastel and paint resist effects. They mix blue and white for a blue tint, layer green and white for a green tint, use a green hue, and add loose lines and grouped dash marks for texture and visual interest.

You can project the PDF, demonstrate the lesson yourself, print the handouts students need and show the example artwork as your hook. Finish with the rubric, reflection pages, peer feedback and artist statement. The finished pieces work well for bulletin board displays, and the lesson also suits sub plans and homeschool art.
