🎯 KS1 Milestone Description
Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2, ages 5–7) marks the beginning of formal learning. The first milestone is about building strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, and scientific curiosity while nurturing confidence and independence.
✏️ English (Literacy)
- Pupils begin to decode words using phonics and develop early reading fluency.
- They learn to write simple sentences with correct punctuation and spelling of common words.
- Listening and speaking skills are strengthened through storytelling, role play, and discussion.
đź§® Mathematics (Numeracy)
- Pupils count, order, and compare numbers up to 100.
- They perform simple addition and subtraction, and begin to understand multiplication and division as grouping/sharing.
- They explore shapes, measures (length, weight, time, money), and simple problem‑solving.
🌱 Milestone Summary
By the end of the first KS1 milestone, pupils are expected to:
- Read and write short texts with growing accuracy.
- Use basic number operations confidently in practical contexts.
- Show curiosity about the world, making simple predictions and observations.
- Develop positive learning habits — listening, sharing ideas, and working independently or in groups.
