New Zealand Preparing For Biosecurity

A practical biosecurity guide for Indian travellers

New Zealand has strict biosecurity rules — and figuring out what you can actually pack from India can be confusing. Before our March 2026 trip, we had the same questions:

Can I carry Maggi? Namkeen? Spices? Medicines? Packaged ready-to-eat meals? What needs to be declared? What happens when I land?

So instead of relying on scattered advice, we researched the official requirements, organised our luggage around them, completed the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD), and tested our approach during our own trip.

We declared our food and medicines honestly and cleared biosecurity in about five minutes.

After the trip, we turned what we learned into this practical guide for Indian travellers.

What You'll Get

1. Our real packing & inventory log

See what two Indian travellers actually packed for New Zealand in March 2026. Our inventory log shows the types of food, medicines and other items we packed, what we declared, and how we organised our luggage.

2. Our NZ Traveller Declaration walk-through

See screenshots and explanations from the NZTD we completed for our own trip.

You'll see:

  • Which categories we answered "Yes" to
  • Why those answers applied to our own luggage
  • How we thought about food, medicines and other potentially relevant items
  • What to check before submitting your own declaration

Important: Our NZTD is a real-world case study, not a template to copy. Your declaration must accurately reflect your own luggage and circumstances, using the current official requirements.

3. "Can I Carry This?" — Indian traveller lookup tables

Instead of searching through long lists every time you're unsure about an item, we've organised common Indian foods and medicines into practical categories.Examples include:

  • Indian snacks & savouries
  • Ready-to-eat meals
  • Dal, flour and other staples
  • Sweets and cooking ingredients
  • Masalas, spices and herbs
  • OTC medicines
  • Prescription medicines
  • Ayurvedic and traditional products

4. What to do when you're unsure

The guide explains how we approached uncertain items and what happens when you declare something that needs further inspection.
