This cozy cowl uses the mosaic knitting technique - where slip stitches knit one color at a time can create dimensional and beautiful colorwork patterns!

I’ve had the vision for this dense and cushy cowl design for quite a while and I really love the mesmerizing repeating patterns, the delicate line that divides them and the Möbius construction that ensures it drapes neatly around your neck. It’s the matching pair to the Edda Hat from Yedra Magazine Issue 3, releasing individually soon! ♥️

SIZES

* Child (Adult): 22 (28.5)”/ 56 (72) cm in circumference by 6 (8.5)” / 15 (22) cm high

See detailed schematics and measurements in Photos.

CONSTRUCTION

Edda is knit sideways to create a tube for double the warmth and a seamless look. It starts with a provisional cast-on followed by two slip stitch sections separated by 2 garter ridges. The cowl finishes with another garter band, making it very easy to graft the last row to the first one by grafting it in garter stitch to join the tube into a loop.

You can choose to knit it in the round or flat (pattern includes both options):

  • in the round – you will avoid seaming, but will need to purl every other round;
  • flat – you will not need to purl at all, but will need to seam the sides together with mattress stitch at the end.

YARN

Sport-weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors (best to use solid, slightly tonal or heathered yarns to show the pattern).

Required yardage (including a swatch):

  • MC (darker): 275 (525) yd / 250 (480) m
  • CC (lighter): 250 (480) yd / 230 (440) m

Sample knit out of John Arbon Textiles ‘Yarnadelic Sport / Heavy 4ply’ (100% Corriedale; 365 yd / 333 m per 3.5 oz / 100g), colorways ‘Black Gold of the Sun’ (black, MC) and ‘Ordinary Joe’ (beige, CC).

See yardages per size per color in Photos.

NEEDLES

You will need 2 sets of needles. Recommended size – US 2.5 / 3 mm (or size to get gauge in Windowpane Pattern). Second set can be smaller, as you will only need it to hold the stitches for the graft.

  • If you choose to knit in the round – 16” / 40 cm circulars
  • If you choose to knit flat – 24-32” / 60- 80 cm circulars (or long straights, but you will still need circulars for the graft)

GAUGE

27 sts x 55 rows per 4” / 10 cm in Windowpane Pattern (mosaic pattern), after wet-blocking in relaxed state.
