Welcome to the uplifting world of traditional Punjabi Sangeet.

Punjabi weddings and celebrations embrace a rich heritage full of rituals and cultural traditions that go back for generations.

Many of the sangeet or songs, the boliyan, suhaag and ghordiyan originated in the rural villages of the Punjab and were passed on verbally from mothers to daughters but were never  actually written down. However more recently there are  many versions of these sangeet in publications transcribed only in the languages of the Indian subcontinent ( Punjabi, Hindi Urdu etc)  but I believe this is the  very first sangeet book to be written in the English Language(Roman Script).

Tradition shapes the essence of all celebrations and in Punjab sangeet (song) is at the root of all weddings, with fivolous sangeet traditionally loaded with banter, jokes and puns. These songs are usually sung by the women and girls of the family. It is a core and much loved part of the family celebrations encompassed within the ladies sangeet events and one tradition that most families aspire to keep alive.

The ladies sangeet events that encapsulate these songs are popular even in the western diaspora, but the ability to sing the songs and keep the tradition going is fast dwindling, and professional singers are now often brought in to fill the void.

I was brought up by a mother who knew every Punjabi song and tradition possible and she made sure her knowledge and passion for these songs and traditions were passed on to her own daughters and granddaughters. We were taught to sing, play dholki and take the lead at the traditional pre wedding events where women would congregate for a night of hilarious song and dance.

To preserve this beautiful and vibrant heritage given to me by my own mother, I have transcribed into English some of the most popular Punjabi wedding sangeet songs so that everyone can sing along and feel the wondrous heart-warming joy of this fabulous uplifting tradition that brings families together.

Punjabi Wedding Sangeet Songs is a compilation of traditional songs for sangeet events, and it is my sincere hope that this beautiful tradition and vibrant heritage is captured to enable the participation of many generations to come.
So get that dholki out, open your book and start singing !
