This guide is designed to help dog owners notice, describe, record, and communicate behavioral changes. It is not a diagnostic manual. No checklist, score, photograph, video, internet article, artificial intelligence system, trainer, or owner observation can replace an examination and diagnosis by a licensed veterinarian when a medical cause may be present.

Behavior can change because of learning, fear, stress, environment, age, pain, illness, sensory decline, neurological disease, medication effects, or several factors at the same time. Veterinary behavioral assessment begins by considering and excluding medical causes that may contribute to the change. For that reason, the safest use of this guide is to improve observation and communication rather than to assign a disease label at home.

VETERINARY DIAGNOSIS COMES FIRST WHEN HEALTH MAY BE INVOLVED

If a change is sudden, severe, persistent, worsening, painful, dangerous, or accompanied by physical symptoms, contact a veterinarian. Emergency signs can include breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, severe weakness, major trauma, marked abdominal swelling, known toxin exposure, severe disorientation, inability to walk normally, or a rapidly deteriorating condition.

Never give a dog human pain medicine, another pet's prescription, or an unapproved supplement as a substitute for veterinary advice. If aggression, growling, snapping, or handling sensitivity appears unexpectedly, protect children, adults, and other animals from risky contact while veterinary assessment is arranged.
