Most guitarists learn shapes without ever seeing how they connect. This book connects them. Its 12 chapters each start on a new page, so you can read it from the front or jump straight to the one you need.

You'll learn how to:

  • Find any note on frets 0 to 12, then test yourself on blank fretboards.
  • Play open, barre and extended chords. The E, A and D barre shapes (roots on the 6th, 5th and 4th strings) come with a table that gives the fret for every key. You'll also meet sus, add9, sixth, seventh, ninth and thirteenth chords.
  • Read rhythm and strum with confidence. Learn note values, rests, dots, ties, triplets, syncopation, swing, time signatures and tempo, then play 11 strumming patterns from beginner to intermediate. Each pattern is shown in three keys, and a table of progressions covers all 12 major keys and six minor keys.
  • Understand the major scale and its W W H W W W H formula. You get seven positions and all seven modes, each with a fretboard diagram.
  • Build chords and keys. Formulas for twelve chord types, the chords in all twelve major keys, the circle of fifths and an interval chart.
  • Master the CAGED system. Five shapes, every note in each shape, and where each one sits in all twelve keys.
  • Connect pentatonic scales to the major scale and CAGED. You get five boxes and a method for choosing which box to play over which chord shape.
  • Play arpeggios in every CAGED shape: major, minor, major 7, minor 7 and dominant 7.
  • Practice with a plan. Eight exercises and a 20-minute daily routine.
