The Energy Audit, the second booklet in a ten-part series by Neil Nelson.

Core Concept: Managing Energy, Not Time

The audit addresses the tendency for men in transition to exhaust themselves by managing schedules rather than energy. Drawing on the metaphor of a power grid, the booklet argues that just as an engine or power grid fails when overdrawn, humans require a maintenance system to avoid burnout.

The Audit Process

Readers are encouraged to use a 7-day perspective, being honest about their fatigue rather than focusing on how they wish they felt. The process involves:

  • Identification: Pinpointing "Radiators" (activities/people that recharge the battery) and "Drains" (activities/people that cause leaks).
  • The Grid Audit: An assessment featuring ten questions covering morning routines, decision fatigue, physical fuel, digital habits, and alignment with personal values.
  • Calibration: Developing a recovery protocol to eliminate, delegate, or automate tasks that waste mental bandwidth.

The ultimate objective is to provide a map for stopping energy "leaks" to ensure capacity for work that matters, referred to as one's "Legacy". By identifying the first "drain" to plug, readers are invited to consider how a 20% increase in energy could allow them to finally start a legacy project.
