Family Tree Spreadsheet

Keep your whole family tree in one tidy spreadsheet that does the linking for you. Add each person once, type their parents' ID numbers, and the organizer fills in names everywhere: on a four-generation tree, a family view and a summary of what's still missing.

WORKS IN EXCEL AND GOOGLE SHEETS

Simple, standard formulas only: no macros, no add-ons, nothing to install. Open it in Microsoft Excel (Windows or Mac), or upload it to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets for free. Share the Google Sheets copy so the whole family can add names.

WHAT'S INSIDE (9 linked tabs)

• People: room for 500 people, with dates, places, occupation and notes. Link father, mother and spouse by ID number

• Tree: type any ID and see four generations of ancestors

• Family View: one person with parents, spouse and every child

• Timeline, Research Log (Found / Not found menu), Sources and To-Do (done items cross out)

• Summary: live counts of people, missing birth years and unlinked parents

• Start Here: how it works, in one page

WHAT YOU GET

• family-tree-organizer.xlsx: blank, ready for your family

• family-tree-organizer-sample.xlsx: filled with a made-up family so you can see how it works

• A 5-page printable guide (US Letter and A4 PDF): opening it in Excel or Google Sheets, linking people, every tab explained

HOW IT WORKS

1. Download your files right after checkout (the link is also in your email)
2. Open the .xlsx in Excel, or upload it to Google Drive and open with Google Sheets
