Operation Overlord was the code name for the allied assault on the Normandy beaches the 6 June 1944. The aim was the liberation of Europe from the Nazis.
This article concentrates on the landings at three of the key beaches : Gold, Juno and Sword Beaches.
British forces landed at Gold Beach and Sword Beach, and Canadien forces landed at Juno Beach.
The article includes a description of the taking of Pegasus Bridge by the British special forces.
