Stop Worrying About Where the Next Toilet Is on Hadrian's Wall 🚻

Before we ever set foot on the trail, this was one of my biggest worries. As a woman, the thought of not being able to find a proper toilet and having to go outside worried me more than the actual miles did. I wondered whether I'd really be able to manage a full day on the trail without knowing where the next option was, and just thinking about it had me stressed before we'd even started walking.

It's a small thing that can loom large. Not knowing what's ahead means you might find yourself holding on because you're unsure when the next toilet will appear, or cutting a break short because you don't want to get caught without an option. Over several days on the trail, that uncertainty adds up.

That's why we put together this guide. It started with the toilets we noted while actually walking the Path ourselves, and we've kept researching since, adding more locations as we learn about them. The result is a clear picture of what's ahead, section by section, so you can relax and enjoy the walk instead of guessing.

What You'll Get

  • Complete route coverage: List of 40+ toilets, cafés, pubs, visitor centers, and honesty boxes, plus multiple additional options in Newcastle and Carlisle, organized section by section along the entire Hadrian's Wall Path.
  • Both directions covered: separate east-to-west and west-to-east guides, so it matches whichever way you're walking.
  • Printable and mobile-friendly: print it at home or download it to your phone before you set off, so you can use it on the trail without relying on a signal.
  • Supports local businesses: many of the options are cafés and pubs along the route, an easy way to grab a coffee and give back to the communities you're walking through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who created this guide?

Hi, I'm Anisa. I walked the Hadrian's Wall Path myself and noted toilet locations along the way. I've continued researching the route since then, and walkers in the Hadrian's Wall First Time Walkers Community, the Facebook group I run, also help flag new or changed facilities.

Who is this for?

Anyone walking the Hadrian's Wall Path who wants to plan ahead and stop worrying about where the next toilet will be, especially first-time long-distance walkers.

Will this work if I'm walking either direction?

Yes. Both an east-to-west and a west-to-east version are included, so you'll always be reading the guide in the direction you're actually walking.

Are toilet locations always open?

This guide tells you where facilities are located, not whether they'll be open when you arrive. Public toilets and visitor centers can have seasonal hours, and café or pub hours can change too, so we recommend checking ahead if you're relying on a particular stop. For cafés and pubs, a quick look at their social media page is often the fastest and most reliable way to check.

Do I need to buy something to use these toilets?

It depends on the location. Some are designated public toilets, so no purchase needed. For the cafés and pubs on the list, we'd recommend buying something to support these small businesses, even just a cup of tea, and a lot of them have some really good treats worth trying anyway.

Are the bathrooms clean?

For the most part, yes. I'm pretty picky about this myself, and I was impressed with how clean most of the facilities were when I did the walk, though some were better than others. Standards can change over time, so if you come across one that's not up to par, a friendly word to the owner or staff is the best way to help them keep it in good shape for the next walker.

Can I buy this as a gift?

Yes. At checkout, select Payhip's "Give this as a gift" option and enter the recipient's name and email instead of your own.

Is this a physical product?

No, this is a digital download. You'll receive two PDF guides (east-to-west and west-to-east) and can print the one that matches your direction, or just use it on your phone or tablet.
