Summer Kite Line Art Lesson Primary Line Pattern Art Project Summer Art Activity
In this Summer Kite Line Art Lesson, students draw a large kite flying through the sky, divide it into sections and fill each one with zentangle-style doodle patterns. They then use a marker-and-water technique and watercolor to paint a bright summer sky behind it.
The project combines drawing, pattern design, marker blending and watercolor painting, and every kite turns out different. It is designed for elementary students in Grades 1 to 4 and works for art teachers, classroom teachers and homeschool families.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN
Students practice line art and pattern design, zentangle-style doodles, watercolor resist and composition, using the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, space and texture. They start by sketching a large diamond-shaped kite with a flowing tail and decorations, fill each section with a different pattern, then paint the sky, where washable marker lines soften into watercolor-like paint when brushed with water.
Project the step-by-step slides, demonstrate live while students follow along, or print the student guides for independent work. It suits summer and end-of-year art, zentangle units, sub plans and homeschool art.
