This December Write and Draw resource pairs a step-by-step directed drawing with paragraph writing practice for grade 2 to 5 students. On each page, students follow a simple directed drawing, create a December illustration, and then write a paragraph inspired by their artwork.

Drawing first means students are not staring at a blank page. They have something visual and personal to describe, explain or imagine. The drawings by Kathleen McGiveron (Ms Artastic) include holly, snowflake, snowy tree, reindeer, bear, cat, penguin, snowman, gingerbread, poinsettia, candy cane, holiday light, owl, bell, polar bear, stocking, train, bird, candles, kid, elf, cardinal, ornament, Santa's hat and wreath.

HOW TO USE IT

Use the pages for morning work, writing centers, art centers, early finishers, sub plans, independent writing journals or homeschool writing practice. Print single pages as you need them, or turn the set into a December write and draw booklet that students work through over the month.

Because the writing comes from their own artwork, students feel more ownership. They can describe what they drew, add details, describe a winter setting or imagine a character. It suits reluctant writers, creative students and visual learners especially well, and gives calm, creative work during a busy season.
