Description:

The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy is focused towards those seeking to gain employment as a sports massage therapist working with the general public and athletes.

The qualification consists of five mandatory units:

• Anatomy and physiology for sports massage

• Principles of health and fitness

• Professional practice in sports massage

• Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction

• Sports massage treatments

Through this qualification you will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to competently apply sport massage methods to dysfunctional tissue and in a pre, post, intra/inter and maintenance massage context.

This includes professional practice, expected standards and related legislation and legal requirements.

You will develop knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology related to sports massage and the principles of health and fitness which combined will equip you to better understand the athlete, the problems they may be incurring and how sports massage can help.

In addition you will develop an understanding of the differences between soft tissue dysfunction

and injury and the role that sports massage plays.


This qualification is completed through the exam board - The VTCT (Vocational training and charitable trust); and is Ofqual regulated.


This qualification is regulated on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and has been mapped to the following NOS:

• CNH1 - Explore and establish the client’s needs for complementary and natural healthcare

• CNH7 - Provide massage therapy to clients

• CNH20 - Plan, apply and evaluate massage methods

This qualification is approved and supported by SkillsActive, the sector skills council for active leisure and learning.

Pre-requisite / Entry level:

A massage or fitness qualification is recommended, as well as anatomy & physiology.


Course format:

7 practical (classroom) training / assessment / exam days + online learning modules + case studies


+ monthly video calls for coursework support (dates tbc)


Course content:

  • USP41 Anatomy and physiology for sports massage
  • USP42 Principles of health and fitness
  • USP43 Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction
  • USP44 Professional practice in sports massage
  • USP45 Sports massage treatments


Duration:

  • GLH (Guided Learning Hours): 225. (GLH incl’s. practical, coursework, case studies, assessments, research/reading, revision, written exams)
  • Home study (Coursework): This is completed in your own time
  • Practical Training: Please check out our current course dates on our website for the practical training element, additional dates can be supplied.


Attendance:

7 classroom days (ALL dates must be attended)

Model required:

  • Yes, you will be required to work on models to carry out your case studies at home.
  • You may be required to bring a model for one to one training, and for your assessments


Case Studies:

You must carry out and document evidence of a minimum of 18 treatments (6 x pre, 6 x post & 6 x maintenance sports massages)

Career potential:

Sports massage therapist - employed or self-employed, working in a salon or spa or as a home / mobile therapist.


How this could benefit your clients:

Prepare clients for sports events with pre event massage as well as post event massage. Provide inter & maintenance massages in between sporting activities to help clients with dysfunctional tissue


Additional Costs:

You will need to purchase your own products and oils to bring to the training & in order to carry out your case studies, ie massage medium such as grapeseed oil or massage wax
