Finding the Names, Volume One — Installment 71: 483 more entries transcribed name by name from Roll 8 (New Orleans Inward Manifests, 1837–1841; National Archives Microfilm Publication M1895, NAID 173898130), images 1,081–1,116 — the last of the roll. 476 named, 7 unnamed, on 17 documents, dated January to December 1841. FREE. Roll 8 is complete with this installment: 5,513 entries in Installments 62–71.

Inside: the brig Creole's two filings of her one famous voyage — Richmond's 53 lines (her certificate says "Fifty one") and Norfolk's 84 numbered lines, 86 people (her certificate says "eighty four Persons"), a clerk's pencilled tally at the foot joining them: "84 / 51 / 135." Madison Washington, 22, stands at entry 25 of the Norfolk table. The New Orleans inspectors' arrival notes of 2 December 1841 find only four people aboard against the Norfolk manifest, and only one — Lydia Ann Gordon — against the Richmond one; the rest were free at Nassau. Also in these pages: the brig Angora's 79 on one long pasted-together sheet, and her infant Juliet, who died on the passage; a family of four bracketed together on the Porpoise under a term-service oath; and Lavinia, sent home from Havana on the U.S. consul's own sworn declaration — her only shipping record.

Every entry was transcribed by hand from the National Archives' own scans of the original manifests. Where a manifest and its certificate disagree, both readings are printed. Nothing is guessed and nobody is tidied away.
